Conal Gulban sons of Muirchertach

Post by tamcevoy »

Cross posted from the Sons of Aodh Project.
Thanks to Zack by way of Grainne for MacFirbis' genealogical info on the Cenel Conaill. For the McGee/Kee etc surnames in group Dál Cuinn R1b-DF104>R1b-DF105>R1b-ZZ87>R1b-DF85>R1b-DF97-R1b-ZZ36 Uí Néill, Cenél Conaill, Cenel Sedna, Muintir ÓMaelgaethe Chief Poet of Donegal Erenagh of Clondahorky, AND ALSO our Carnahan under Dál Cuinn R1b-DF104>R1b-DF105>R1b-ZZ87>R1b-DF85>R1b-DF97>R1b-ZZ36-Uí Néill, Cenél Conaill, Muintir Dalachain? (I will be changing this to Clann Cearnacháin) as well as anyone under ZZ36 which I am currently calling Sil Muirchertach? See the attached, in particular we have a description of brothers who descend from Muirchertach who had 5 sons; 1.Cearnachan- from whom are Clann Chaernachain (Carnahan) 2. Maol Gaoithe from who are the Ui Mhaoil Gaoithe (McKee/Gee/Kay etc) 3. Maol Foithil from whom are the Ui Mhaoil Fhoithil (surname?) 4. Bradigan from whom descend the Clann Bhradigaigh (Boyle) and 5. Dalach from who are the Clann Dalaigh (O' Donnell) . It would be interesting to sort through distinguishing snps and then put this info into Vances SNP tree to get a visual. Larkin said that the Ó Maelgaethe were a Cinel Sedna sept. Perhaps he meant that they were of Sil Sedna because he may have been uncertain. MacFirbis clarifies their descent from Maol Gaoithe here, which seems to fit well under ZZ36 with the other surnames so far. How lucky to be hosted on the McKee project lol

Don't forget Dr. Bart Jaski's genealogical charts for the Cenél Conaill. He did extensive work going through these genealogies. There is also this preserved chart from the defunct McLaughlin of Dún na nGall website as well:

This is definitely a complex genealogy to untangle.

David, like most available sources I could find only 2 sons who were mentioned there, Dalach and Bradigan. I really wanted to find something definitive for the McKee's and Carnahan's. Woulfe does seem to have the most information available. It's possible that Muirchertach did have fewer sons and the others are grandsons, it would sure make more sense looking at how the SNPs and surnames are falling.
